For Phone/Web Workers

**The purpose of these tips is to lower our risk in our workplace. As with any job, no workplace is risk-free. We know that no matter how many steps we take to protect ourselves, some people will not respect our boundaries and our bodies. THAT IS NOT OUR FAULT. We have the right to take steps to make our work environment safe.**

*The following information can be found in the St. James Infirmary Occupational Health and Safety Guide

  • Perks to working for an established company are that the company is most likely to
    • provide most of your customers
    • do most of the advertising
    • manage customer transactions
  • Perks to working for yourself or with a business partner
    • Aside from percentage paid to the partner, your earnings will be yours
    • You have more control over how you present yourself
    • May end up with clients you like better
  • To separate work and home life, try to have a dedicated part of your home where you can work  (it will also help in staying focused!)
  • Have a staging area with cushions, blankets and a backdrop (or something more elaborate) to set the scene as a webcam worker
  • Sex toys/props come in handy to use, show off or for sound effects
  • Use a special box to keep unused toys separate from used ones
  • Cool, non-caffeinated drinks can soother your throat if you’re doing a lot of phone sex
  • Take breaks away from your computer screen, if you’re doing a lot of administrative tasks and emailing, to stretch and loosen your muscles
  • A supportive desk chair can be well worth the cost
  • When trying to ensure privacy:
    • Block your number before returning a call on your phone by dialing *67
    • If a customer wants to send you a gift, have it sent to the company’s PO Box or to your own PO box
    • If you run your own site, register your domain by using a service called Domains by Proxy which keeps your personal information (contact info) from a public search
